Draw your family portrait.
This is an activity you may engage in with your clinician during therapy. However, the “portrait” of family therapy can vary widely. It may involve parents with adult children, parents with minor children, blended families, or any unique configuration that reflects your family system.
Interconnected unit vs collection of individuals.
Family therapy sees the family as a connected and dynamic system. Therapists look for behaviors or generational patterns that may be creating stress within the family, understanding that when one person struggles, everyone can feel the impact. Therapy aims to improve the family’s overall well-being by supporting healthier coping, clearer and more confident communication, stronger boundaries, and more flexible family roles—helping the household feel more balanced and connected.
